Dr Sue Pillans - Drawing a brighter marine future

Dr Sue Pillans is an Aussie marine scientist, artist, children’s author/illustrator and graphic recorder who specialises in creative and visual communications. Sue combines her training as a marine scientist and experience as a strategic planner with her imaginative skills as an artist to help people, teams and organisations to “Picture your ideas” through visual storytelling.

Sue has worked with over 40 organisations on a wide range of topics, ideas and issues across Australia and the Asia-Pacific Region, illustrating ideas and concepts through hand-drawn Infographics.

“I help to make the complex simple and the simple compelling“

Sue is the author / illustrator (authorstrator) of a series of ocean-science picture books:

These stories excite, engage, educate and empower children about our living oceans and their underwater wonders. Sue’s alter ego Dr Suzie Starfish (Author/Illustrator) uses the art of marine science and storytelling to bring our ‘Living Oceans’ into classrooms.

Sue also has over 15 years experience in research and development, marine conservation planning, natural resource management and strategic planning due to the varied roles she has held across Government and Research Organisations.

Sue has a PhD in Marine Science from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, where she is also an adjunct Research Fellow in the Centre of Biodiversity and Conservation Science.
